An defence minister has confirmed that the Ministry of Defence is currently investigating the potential threats posed by Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been advised to refrain from talking about classified information in any vehicles.
Safety Advice for MoD Personnel
During a recent appearance on LBC, Luke Pollard commented on reports that Ministry of Defence staff have been told not to talk about classified material while travelling in Chinese vehicles.
He stated that the ministry is “investigating” cars from China within its fleets, but noted that safety is a issue in all contemporary vehicles.
Our department has a collection of thousands of cars in the MoD and Chinese ones represent a very small number.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, our instruction to our people is to avoid connecting MoD technology into their vehicle, not to have conversations at a classified classification in any kind of car, because of the growing threats of surveillance that exist in all vehicle, to only have those secret conversations in protected areas. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for anyone concerned about security.
After it was suggested that it would be wise for the MoD to stop using every Chinese vehicles, Pollard responded: That is precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”
Wider Defence Background
The revelation follows claims from Scandinavian countries have alerted the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could allow China to disable public transport and bring disruption to public transit.
Furthermore, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at RAF pilots, described as a “highly dangerous” act by government representatives.
This broader defence situation underscores the importance of strong protocols and vigilance in every aspects of official operations, from vehicle use to discussions practices.
